Scott Sheldon Catches Quality Bass at Noxon Rapids

Posted by admin on June 8, 2014

2014 Western Divisional: Noxon Reservoir, MTScott Sheldon of Centennial Bass Club is the top angler from Colorado at the BASS Nation Western Divisional, held May 21-23 at Noxon Reservoir, Montana, qualifying him to attend the 2014 B.A.S.S. Nation National Championship, Nov. 6-8, on Louisiana’s Ouachita River.

Quality over Quantity

Sheldon earned the opportunity to make it all the way to the Bassmasters Classic through the BASS Nation qualifying events by catching quality over quantity at this impoundment of the Clark Fork River in northwest Montana.  Landing in 25th place overall after the three day tournament, the Centennial Bass Club member was the top Colorado angler with only 10 bass brought to the scales, but they were the right quality as his total weight of 25 ¾ pounds captured the Colorado State Champion title.

2014 Western Divisional: Noxon Reservoir, MTScott was being chased down by the team’s second place angler, Casey Welch of the Denver Bassmasters, who finished with 24-4 pounds.  Chris Dombkowski (PPBM), Jeff Colwell (CBC), Nate Caldwell (CBC), and Jeremiah Hofstetter (DBM) were also in the hunt, each falling in the 23 pound range, in respective order.

In the Team Standings, Colorado drops to 7th overall with 217-8 total team weight.  Idaho finished in 1st with 304-2, just barely edging the home state of Montana who had 303-3 pounds total weight.  The overall winner of the event is Montana’s Tim Johnston, who weighed in a total of 39 pounds with a limit each day to repeat as the MT State Champion.  There were only 17 anglers with limits each day of the tournament out of the 136 angler field.

Colorado High School Team Members

2014 Western Divisional: Noxon Reservoir, MTA big Thank You to Colorado State University’s Cam Mills for being the CO High School Team Coach.  Adam Deakin and Matt Fuller represented the High School Team members at Noxon this year.  Deakin and Fuller added 15-11 pounds to the Team weight, placing them in 7th overall within the team standings even though they only weighed fish on the 2nd and 3rd days of the event.  Good job guys!  Also a special Thanks to Kyle Price from the New Mexico State College Team, (and NM State Team member,) who volunteered his boat for the Colorado High School Team to use at Noxon.  Kyle came directly to Noxon from the College Divisional at Clear Lake, CA, had his boat in tow, and volunteered it for the CO High School Team members to use.

2014 Western Divisional: Noxon Reservoir, MTCasey Welch gets talked into an onstage performance of The Casey Dance:

2014 Western Divisional, Noxon Reservoir, MTSeveral team members commented on the planning and organization skills of President Audrey McKenney, including Lance Tillotson who stated, “I never ate so well at home, even when I do the cooking!”  The team lodged and had dinners together in the nearby town of Thompson Falls, including birthday celebrations and cake for Jeff Colwell and Casey Welch.  Group photos were taken each practice day before the tournament and each evening after weigh-ins.2014 Western Divisional: Noxon Reservoir, MT

Lastly, the author wants to thank the team for welcoming me to the team picture taken on the final day of the tournament.  I miss fishing with the CBN and all the friends I made over the 15 years I lived in Denver.  Good luck to all of you next year!
