A Busy Year with A Lot of Changes!

Day_3_Audrey_McKenney_at_Grand_2014.jpgPresident McKenney welcomes the new High School and College Clubs to the CBN, including the newest at Pueblo West!  We have a Colorado National Champion! There have been a lot of events recently, more coming up, and a lot of changes have happened lately.  Here is a run-down from Audrey, aka “The Prez.”

It was an extremely busy year for us in 2013, and 2014 is on the same path.  In 2013, our members were great in supporting our community in many ways.

2014_Ft._C_Kids_Day_ctsy_Tom_Grace_3.JPGIn partnership with other organizations our membership supports our troops.  Many of them took the time to provide their boats and equipment to take family members of a deployed service man or woman from one of our very active bases for a fun day of fishing at Pueblo Reservoir at the 2013 Ft. Carson Military Kids Fishing Day, as they have done since the inception of this event.  In addition our members had fundraisers to buy fishing rods, reels and tackle for the kids to take with them.  I am pleased to say we will support this event again on June 14, 2014.  We are currently working on fundraising projects for this event and welcome your support.

Another special community event our members proactively support is CA.S.T. for Kids, an organization designed to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy a quality outdoor recreational experience through the sport of fishing.   Again, our folks provided boats and equipment for these truly special kids for another rewarding day of fishing.  We will be partnering again on this event on June 7, 2014 at Horsetooth Reservoir.  Again, we welcome everyone's support and participation in these two wonderful events - sure to put a smile on your face.

I am pleased to say that we also helped a young man earn his Eagle Scout by providing him with some Conservation funding to build and install special dispensers to dispose of unwanted fishing line at one our lakes.

3_Construction_complete_1.jpegOur Clubs took the lead on several Conservation Projects.  One of the projects we are working on trying to expand throughout our state is partnering with governing authorities on building and placing MossBack Fish Attractors in our lakes.  Last year members conducted several Habitat and Conservation projects in Harriman Reservoir, Horsetooth, Lonetree and other locations.  In 2014, CBN funded a more expansive project of building and placing MossBack Fish Attractors, in Aurora Reservoir - home of the Colorado smallmouth bass State Record. Many thanks to our members for all of their time and energy on making these very successful projects happen.

100_8963.jpgWe have been busy realigning and growing our Youth programs.  We are continuing to find ways to grow and encourage more kids to enjoy the outdoors by fishing.  With the help of our adults, our Junior Clubs continue to educate and host fishing events for kids - both from the bank and in boats.  We encourage everyone to take a kid, of any age, fishing!

We had some very exciting new on the competitive sport side of our organization.  We introduced competitive bass fishing clubs in our high schools and counties.  We have a few clubs implemented and are working on growing our membership.  The high school teams are required to perform community service projects, fundraising projects, and to compete in our High School Championship Tournament - with the opportunity to represent the Colorado Bass Nation at a National Tournament.

Ryan_Wood_JWC_1.jpgThe high school team program replaces the competitive Junior Bassmasters Program, which ended with a "Big Bang" for Colorado. We had two contenders, Seth Willard;16-18 yrs old division) and Ryan Wood (15 and younger), represent the state at the 2013 Western Divisional Tournament at Clear Lake, CA.  Both young men did a great job!  Ryan was able to win his division and move on to the National Championship at Lake Dardanelle.  It is with great pleasure to say that Ryan Wood became the 2013 Jr. Bassmasters National Champion for his division.  Way to go Ryan!!

Our 2013 adult competitive state team also went to Clear Lake, CA, where Ed McCaw won the opportunity to also represent CO at Nationals - Lake Dardanelle.  He gave it his best and fell short of winning, and we are all very proud of his efforts.
